Stefan Oakes began
his career at his hometown club Leicester City in
the mid 1990's; turning professional in 1997.
Despite not
playing as many games as he probably hoped, he
was a member of Leicester City's League Cup
winning team of 2000. In total, Oakes spent six
seasons at Leicester, making 79 appearances and
scoring 4 goals. Just prior to leaving Leicester,
he had a two-month loan spell at Crewe Alexandra
where he made 7 appearances.
Oakes joined
Walsall in July 2003, but again, he failed to
secure a regular first team spot. After just
seven months at Walsall, he left in February 2004
to join Notts County on a free transfer.
It was at Notts
County that Oakes' career finally took off, as he
became a first team regular and a fans' favourite
at Meadow Lane. He made 49 appearances for Notts
County and scored 6 goals in the 18 months that
he spent at County.
Despite being a
first team regular at Notts County, Oakes
rejected a new contract in favour of a transfer
to Wycombe Wanderers in May 2005. At Wycombe, he
established himself a reputation as a great
left-foot passer of the ball as well as a fine
midfield player. He also helps create goals via
pin-point set-piece deliveries.
Imps' boss Peter
Jackson made something of a coup in June 2008
when he managed to persuade Oakes to reject a new
contract at Wycombe in favour of a move to
Lincoln City.
Oakes began the
2008/09 season as a first team regular before
injury cost him that place. By the time he was
recalled, Lincoln were mid-table in the league
and not in the pre-hyped promotion picture. Oakes
became a target of the critics who deemed his
passing a luxury when The Imps required a
hard-working and tough tackling midfielder. The
outcome was that Oakes was dropped from the first
team and spent the remainder of the season as a
bit-part player.
