Leeds United Striker Signs

b5

26th February 2010

Chris Sutton has brought some continental flair to Sincil Bank with his latest signing.

Joining on as month's loan from Leeds United is striker David Somma

Now, you might not have heard of him but he has played around the world and was even advised by former Imps' legend Darren Huckerby to find an English club.

Somma was born in South Africa to Italian parents; aged 12, he moved to Florida. However, he began his football career in Italy with Perugia in 2004 but due to the club's demise, he never played a first team game, so signed for Pro Vasto in 2005.

During his two years at Pro Vasto, he became a first team regular making 39 appearances but only scoring two goals. After leaving Pro Vasto, he joined Italian club Olbia where he made 15 appearances but scored just once.

In 2008, Somma returned to the USA where he joined San Jose Earthquakes; it was while here that he played alongside Huckerby. I say played alongside, but in fact, Somma made just three substitute appearances although he was a regular in their reserve side.

A year later, Somma took Huckerby's advice and began searching for an English club. He initially joined Queens' Park Rangers on trial before going to Leeds for a similar trial. Leeds took him on in September 2009 and he made his debut soon after as a substitute. Unfortunately, he suffered a hamstring injury in his debut game against Darlington and that stalled his Leeds United career.

After recovering from injury, Leeds United manager Simon Grayson decided that it would be good for Somma's development if he went on loan. So in November 2009, he joined Chesterfield for just over a month. Again, though injury struck Somma, causing to play in just three matches for Chesterfield.

Somma will now be hoping that his injury setbacks are behind him as he embarks on a new adventure at Sincil Bank.

Although on face of it, the signing could be a gamble as Somma does not exactly have prolific goal scoring statistics, it is worth noting that he has done particular well for Leeds United's reserve team this season.
