They Think Its All Over...
12th March 2010
"They think its all over....it is now!" (well
almost).
What am I talking about? That's right, Lincoln City's
fight against relegation. Happily, things look a lot more
positive as The Imps defeated Hereford United this
evening via a 3-1 win at Sincil Bank.
So why the 1966 World Cup reference? Well, because Sincil
Bank not only played host to Hereford but it also began
the only English ground to have the World Cup visit on
its tour to South Africa. That's correct, today was the
day that the World Cup came to Lincoln.
What do you expect from a World Cup tournament?
Basically, its good football and excellent goals. Did
Sincil Bank get it? Yep, among their three goals were two
contenders for goal of the season.
The first was scored by loanee Davide Somma, who netted
his second goal for City. Scott Kerr did well to pick
Somma out with a pass but the striker did even better
once he had beaten his marker as he fired an unstoppable
shot from the edge of the penalty area for 1-0.
Managerless Hereford could count themselves unlucky not
to equalise when they saw a shot cleared off the goal
line by Cian Hughton. That was probably a significant
turning point as soon afterwards, Lincoln scored their
second goal. This is also a contender for goal of the
season as Matt Saunders was allowed to bring the ball
forward before firing a dipping shot from 35-yards out
that landed in the net.
Just before half-time, the visitors scored what would be
their only goal of the match, as Marc Pugh fired past
Imps' goalkeeper Rob Burch.
The goal gave Hereford a boost and they came out fighting
in the second half winning several corners that caused
some heart racing nervous moments for City's fans.
Thankfully, they did not score and even more thankfully,
City did! Somma created the 71st minute goal when his
neat piece of skill created space to pass to Saunders who
scored his second goal of the game.
Perhaps Hereford will feel that score flattered Lincoln
but for once, lets just enjoy the victory and not worry
about the little things as Chris Sutton's men edge nearer
to safety. The Imps are now eleven points ahead of the
last relegation place but the other clubs play tomorrow
so that could change.
One last point to mention is the evening saw several
tributes to the late Lincoln City manager Keith
Alexander.
