Lincoln City may not be the most successful team in English football since we are the oldest team never to have been represented in the highest division nor at Wembley although they have played at Cardiff's national stadium in two play-off finals.

Historical breakdown per Division up to 1991/92 season is :-

In 1992 English football was reorganised with the introduction of the English Premiership instead of the old Division 1. Hence Division 2 now became the new Division 1, old Division 3 became the new Division 2 whilst the Division 4 was renamed Division 3 but is still the lowest Division in the English Football League.

In 2004, the division were renamed with Division 3 becoming League Two.
