Retro Lincoln City FC

DAVE BARNETT
Dave Barnett - a former Lincoln City FC central defenderBorn 16th April 1967 in Birmingham.

Position: Centre-half.

Lincoln City Career: 25+(2) appearances and 4 goals between July 1999 - September 2001.

Football League Career: 252+(10) appearances and 9 goals.

Clubs: Windsor & Eton, Colchester, Edmonton Oilers, West Brom, Walsall, Kidderminster, Barnet, Birmingham, Dunfermline, Port Vale and Forest Green Rovers.

Dave Barnett was an experienced defender who signed for The Imps in August 1999 on a two year contract after impressing during trials. He quickly become a first-team regular due to Lincoln City's shortage of defensive players.

A favourite player of Barry Fry, who signed him for both Barnet and later for Birmingham City - but then again, who did not sign for Fry's Birmingham City!

Barnett emigrated to Canada to play for Edmonton Oilers after leaving Colchester United.

In January 2000 he had a falling out with the Lincoln City management and a month later, he was transferred on loan to Forest Green Rovers. Ironically the move came at a time when he was due to make his International debut for the Cayman Islands in March 2000. However, due to FIFA rules he was - along with the other English based players in the squad - banned from representing the Cayman Islands.

Barnett returned to Lincoln after playing three matches for Forest Green and indicated that he would stay to fight for a place until his contract expired at the end of the following season. However in May 2000, it was announced by that Barnett would be able to leave Lincoln on a free transfer at the end of 1999/2000 season much to the player's disgust. It would later emerge that the reasoning behind this decision was because Lincoln City were running out cash and Barnett was one of the club's highest paid players.

In the end, fate intervened as Barnett was forced to retire from professional football in August 2000 due to an injury. He has since worked at the youth academy of Birmingham City on a part-time basis.

In March 2001 he joined Halesowen Town as Brendan Phillips' assistant manager and played in the following pre-season with Halesowen. However, he left Halesowen in August 2001 as Birmingham City offered him a full-time post at their academy.

Barnett also owns a successful restaurant in Birmingham.

MATTHEW GHENT
Matthew Ghent - a former Lincoln City FC goalkeeperBorn 5th October 1981 in Burton On Trent.

Position: Goalkeeper.

Lincoln City Career: 1+(1) appearances between November 2000 - February 2001.

Clubs: Aston Villa, Lincoln City, Forest Green Rovers and Barnsley.

Matthew Ghent became the third goalkeeper to sign for Lincoln during the 2000/01 season when he joined The Imps on a non-contract basis in November 2000. He had yet to make his Football League debut but had figured on the substitutes' bench for Aston Villa before his release.

In the first match after his arrival at Sincil Bank, Ghent was forced into action at Carlisle when Alan Marriott had to limp off injured. He made one further appearance for Lincoln, but a dreadful error saw him gift non-league Dagenham and Redbridge a FA Cup victory over Lincoln; Ghent never played for Lincoln City again.

In February 2001, he quit both Lincoln City FC and professional football altogether to become a taxi driver in Birmingham. However, he was quickly signed by conference side Forest Green Rovers and later returned to the Football League by signing for Barnsley but left after a short while.

After a spell out of the game, Ghent returned in summer 2006 to sign for Sutton Town. Soon after, he joined Tamworth but made just one appearance in October 2006.

Ghent signed for Solihull Moors in July 2007 but left six months later and disappeared again. However, in March 2009, Ghent joined Rushall Olympic of the Northern Premier League Division One South.

PETER FOLKES
Born: 16th November 1984 in Birmingham.

Position: Centre-half.

Lincoln City Career: 1+(2) appearances between July 2004 - January 2006.

Clubs: Bristol City, Bradford City, Farsley Celtic, Lincoln City and Tamworth.

Peter Folkes signed for Lincoln City in July 2004 on a free transfer after rejecting a new contract at Bradford City.

By rights, Lincoln should still have paid compensation to Bradford City as Folkes was under 24 years of age. However, no fee was involved as Bradford City told their players that they could leave for free if they received an offer, as the cashless club sought to stay in business.

Birmingham-born Folkes joined Bradford in August 2003 following his release from Bristol City. He had yet to make his professional debut when he joined Lincoln, although he had played for Farsley Celtic during the 2003/04 season on loan.

He made just three appearances for Lincoln and in November 2005, he went for a trial at Chester City. Two months later, he accepted a severance package and left Lincoln City for good. Within a few days, he signed for Conference club Tamworth, who also agreed to gave Walsall the first option on Folkes.
