Former Imps' boss Keith Alexander watched Derek Asamoah for quite awhile before finally making his move in March 2005. On February 28th 2005, Asamoah was transfer listed by Mansfield after an altercation with Mansfield's then caretaker-manager Carlton Palmer. The argument was allegedly caused by Asamoah refusing to play in a position that was not his usual spot, although Asamoah's agent denied this.

Palmer later issued a statement, which confirmed that Asamoah would never play for Mansfield again, while he was in charge. On the day that Palmer was handed the managerial reigns of Mansfield on a full-time basis, Asamoah signed for Lincoln.

At the time, Palmer said: "I believe that there is no way back for him (Asamoah) now because he has shown total disregard for the management team, his team mates and the club. And, apart from that he is a centre forward that has only scored five goals with the season almost over which is not really acceptable."

"This is not the first time I have had to speak to Derek about his attitude but it has been the last straw really. I need somebody who is fully committed to the club and his team mates and not just a crowd pleaser. I need somebody who is capable of scoring me 20 or more goals."

Asamoah was born in Ghana but began his football career at non-league Hampton and Richmond. He joined Northampton Town in June 2001 and stayed three seasons, making 132 appearances although he only started 38 matches. During his spell at Northampton, he scored 13 goals.

In June 2004 he joined Mansfield Town on a free transfer where he established himself as a first team regular. Prior to his falling-out with Palmer, he had started 27 games while coming on as a substitute in 7 other matches. Two red cards and five goals were also added to his Mansfield career statistics.

Lincoln faced competition from several other clubs for Asamoah, including county rivals Boston United.

He became an immediate first team regular at Lincoln, although his lack of goals continued to prove a problem. It become so much of a problem, that in January 2006, he was loaned to Chester City for six months.

His time at Chester was mixed, as he was involved in a disagreement over a missed training session. He was in and out of the side before hitting a rich vain of form that saw him score seven goals in four matches. However, his career at Lincoln City was finished and upon returning from his loan, he was released in May 2006.

There was still one final twist in Asamoah's Lincoln City career because shortly before his release, he received a call-up to the Ghana international squad to win his first cap in a friendly against French club side Nice. Unfortunately, the Ghana side were dreadful during that match and Asamoah failed to make Ghana's 2006 World Cup squad.

Asamoah spent summer 2006 on trial at both Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe United before agreeing a permanent transfer to Shrewsbury Town. He scored ten goals for Shrewsbury during the 2006-07 season, which was a much better return than he managed at Lincoln. This brought him to the attention of Nice - the club that he made his international debut against (see above) - and they offered him a trial. Despite not having the permission of Shrewsbury, Asamoah went anyway, thereby causing a massive row between Shrewsbury and the player. Fortunately for Asamoah, Nice were impressed meaning that he did not have to return to Shrewsbury.

The move to Nice was not a success as Asamoah did not make a single first team appearance during the 18 months that he stayed at the club. In January 2009, he was released by Nice via mutual consent. Despite not playing a first team game for 18 months, Asamoah was handed a short-term contract with Scottish premier club Hamilton Academical.

Lincoln City career: 22+(6) appearances between August 2003 - May 2004.

Clubs: Eastwood Town, Middlesbrough, Bradford City, Carlisle, Notts County, Lincoln City, Boots Athletic, Bashford United and Hucknall Town.

Richard Liburd began his career at Eastwood Town in 1992 but within a year, Middlesbrough's talent scouts persuaded then Boro manager Lennie Lawrence to pay £20,000 for Liburd. He made 52 appearances for Middlesbrough, scoring one goal, before transferring to Bradford City in the summer of 1994, for £200,000; by then, Bradford were managed by Lawrence.

During his 3½ year spell at Bradford, he made 93 appearances for the West Yorkshire club, scoring 3 times. A brief 3-month spell at Carlisle was undertaken in February 1998 before he joined Notts County on a free transfer. Liburd became a regular in the Notts County side, making 175 appearances and scoring 11 goals over a five-year period.

A utility player, he was initially expected to fill the vacant Imps' left-back spot that Stuart Bimson's departure to Cambridge United had created although Liburd plays his best football in midfield. He struggled with injuries throughout the 2003/04 season but he was a skilful and creative player who was unlucky to be released in May 2004. He rejoined Eastwood Town upon his release from Lincoln City but he failed to see the season out with Eastwood.

After a two year break from football, Liburd joined Boots Athletic of the Nottinghamshire Senior League. A few weeks later, he signed for Bashford United but departed in January 2007.

Liburd undertook a brief trial at Hucknall Town in the summer of 2007 but they did not pursue their interest causing him to have another break from football. However in November 2008, Hucknall had a change of mind and signed Liburd in a permanent transfer.

Jamie Sherlock joined Lincoln City in March 2006 on a short-term contract from non-league Gainsborough Trinity in a shock transfer. Sherlock's signing was a complete surprise because his career has actually taken several downward turns over the years. In 2002, he was playing for the then Unibond First Division club North Ferriby United but left to move further down the non-league pyramid with Brigg Town.

The gamble proved correct and he became a member of a successful side. This persuaded Conference club Scarborough to sign him from Brigg. While at Scarborough, he played alongside future Lincoln City players Colin Cryan and Scott Kerr.

His time at Scarborough also included a loan move to Ossett Town before Scarborough decided to allow him to leave permanently. Hence, in summer 2004, Sherlock moved down a division to sign for Gainsborough Trinity. During the 2005/06 season, Sherlock made 27 league and cup appearances for Gainsborough but failed to score.

Sherlock signed a new one year contract at Lincoln City FC, which tied him to the club until June 2007. However, he left in March 2007 by mutual consent after failing to play a first team game for Lincoln City although he did feature regularly for Lincoln City's reserves.
